The FIFA World Cup 2014 Overview

Secrets to Soccer Training: The FIFA World Cup 2014 Overview

Just like a fine wine, every World Cup improves with age. FIFA World Cup 2014 proved again to the world why it is the most thrilling sport in the world. When it comes to entertainment, this sporting event surely does deliver one hundred percent drawing interest from people from all walks of life even those with the slightest idea about the sport are keen to watch the games.

Every four years, many teams from around the world participate in this event. But only 32 teams will make it to the final World Cup Tournament.  Much like many World Cup before, this World Cup did has its thrills of ups and downs, disappointments, and of course a Winner as well.

Some of the venues were at Estadio Pantal, Estadio Do Maracana, Estadio Castelao, Estadio Nacional, Estadio Mineirao, Arena De Sao Paulo, Arena Pernambuco and Arena Fontenova. In this World Cup, there were many great goals and also some of the best saves within the tournament. In total, there were 171 goals. Some of the best goals of the event were by Robin Van Persie against Spain during the second day of the tournament. He received a long ball from Daley Blind at the edge of the box and headed it past goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

The second best came from Australian Tim Cahill against the Netherlands. Even though they ended up losing 3-2 to the Dutch, this goal was a definate winner for this leading national all time goal scorer. His long ball ensured his nation got a well deserved goal.

The third best goal came from little known James Rodriguez, the Colombian that ended up bagging the golden boot at the FIFA world Cup 2014. He scored a left footed volley that went past Uruguayan goalkeeper Nestor Fernando Muslera. This for sure made him the most deserved recipient of the award.

As much as the goals were scored, superb saves were also made thus making some of the goalkeepers shine in the tournament. Germany’s goalkeeper was the best of them all steering his country to the finals and emerging the eventual winners. This could not go unnoticed because his efforts were rewarded with him receiving the golden glove.

Messi did not go home empty handed because he ended up being awarded for being the most outstanding player of the FIFA World Cup 2014 and yet another feather to his cap.

This clearly showed that every team put in a lot of work but there were also names that outshone the rest in the event. Every team had its lead man for instance Brazil had Neymar, Uruguay had Suarez, Argentina had Messi and Colombia had James Rodriguez. This dependence on one player can be risky as demonstrated in the case of Brazil when they lost their playmaker Neymar to injury during their quarter final match.

It led to them being eliminated at the semifinals and being fourth overall after a 7-1 thrashing by the Germans and a 3-0 defeat by the Dutch. It clearly showed even powerhouses can crumble mightily when weak and under pressure.

This handed the host nation the worst defeat experienced during a world cup. They probably learned that secrets to soccer training are having a backup plan that can save them in case of an uncertainty and practice for mental toughness in cases of despair and failure and employ teamwork too because soccer is a sport that is a team effort. The coaches also played a great role in the performance of their teams. Some of them were outstanding while others performed dismally.

It definitely was the best event for coaches like Argentina’s Alejandro Sabella, Netherlands’ Louis Van Gaal and Germany’s Joachim Loew. Some that would wish the nightmare of the FIFA World Cup 2014 would fade away soon are the likes of Brazil’s Luis Felipe Scolari and Spain’s Vincente Del Bosque. Considering Spain was the reigning champions, their performance was the most shocking of them all. It was the first time reigning champions registered a terrible performance.

Though some teams are not powerhouses when it comes to football, they sure did perform well. Team USA, also showed their prowess by fighting till the end where they advanced to the knockout stage under the coaching of Jurgen Klinnsman. Their success could be attributed to secrets to soccer training. Algeria and Nigeria too showed that they are not to be ignored by representing the African continent up to the quarter final stage. This clearly showed that football is indeed a world sport.

This year’s world cup had many matches going into extra time with some of them determining the winner through penalties testing the goalkeeping skills of the teams. The final match between Germany and Argentina saw the match go into extra time whereby a lone goal by Mario Gotze saw the Germans lift the cup a fourth time.

Secrets to soccer training helps players to know how to act in case of stress or failure, ways to improve their striking, dribbling and defending skills. It also encourages teamwork and the art of Tiki Taka that was perfected by the Spanish team during the 2010 World Cup that they emerged winners.

A World Cup event wouldn’t be complete without an opening and closing ceremony. Entertainment was provided by reknowned international artistes like Pitbull, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and many more. The opening ceremony did not elicit very good reviews and it was considered just average. Entertainment is also a key factor that is considered besides the action on the field. The ceremonies were held at Estadio Do Maracana.

Club transfers were the order for the day after players’ performances were closely monitored by prospective clubs and this was clearly a good place to scout for new signings. For some players, it was not smooth sailing because some got red cards, injuries while others received bans for a period of time. This resulted in them missing crucial matches for their countries.

Uruguayan player Luis Suarez saw the FIFA World Cup 2014 have him banned for four months for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini clearly stating that severe action can be taken against unsportsmanlike behavior and though many saw the punishment as severe, football governing body FIFA upheld its ruling.

These kind of insistences prove that every world cup has had its fair share of good times and bad times but the good always outshines everything else. The World Cup always has fans from all over the world united for a whole month. This is why this event is worth waiting for every four years.

USA Men’s National Soccer Team in FIFA World Cup 2014

Secrets to Soccer Training: USA Men’s National Soccer Team in FIFA World Cup 2014

USA Men National Soccer Team FIFA 2014Like in many other previous tournaments, USA is among the teams that made it to the 20th edition 2014 World Cup held in Brazil. The team was scheduled for tight fixtures against some of the strongest opponents in the group of death, but still managed to make it to knockout stage. This can be attributed to the number of changes new coach Jurgen Klinsmann made on the national squad. It can also be accredited to new secrets to soccer training that comes with coach replacements. Here is a summary of the 23-man representative team that USA took to Brazil.

Goalkeepers:
There were three spots for goalkeepers which featured the prolific first choice Tim Howard who plays in Everton, England at professional level. The experienced 35 year old has been the preferred candidate in the US goal since 2007. Other keepers included Aston Villa’s Brad Guzan and Nick Rimando who plays professional football for Real Salt Lake.

Defenders:
The USA men national soccer team consisted of 8 defenders divided in central, right back and left back positions. The central defense featured Sporting Kansas City’s Matt Besler (26) and Hertha Berlin’s John Brooks (21). They were supported on the left by 32 year old DaMarcus Beasley who plays at Puebla Mexico and 24 year old Timothy Chandler (FC Nuremburg) on the right back position. Other defenders included the versatile 28 years old Geoff Cameron who plays club soccer for Stoke City, England and 26 years old Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim, Germany). LA Galaxy’s Omar Gonzalez (25) was also included in central defense and the young 23 year old DeAndre Yeldin also earned a right back place in the World Cup. He plays for his birthplace club Seattle Sounders in US.

Midfielders:
USA also sent eight midfielders to represent them in the world’s biggest tournament. The crew included 27 year old playmaker Graham Zusi who plays club soccer alongside teammate Besler in Sporting Kansas City. Central midfield was tasked with experienced Jermaine Jones who plays for Besiktas, Turkey. The 33 year old scored a goal in their second game draw against Portugal in the 2014 World Cup. Another seasoned midfielder was Toronto FC’s Michel Bradley (25), Houston Dynamo’s Brad Davis (33) and Real Salt Lake’s Kyle Beckrman (32). Other midfielders included 25 year old Alejandro Bedoya who plays for FC Nantes in France and the young Julian Green. Green was a surprise inclusion considering he is only 19 and a reserve player at Bayern Munich in Germany. He scored US last goal of the competition against Belgium in the round of 16.

Forwards:
The USA men national soccer team employs a 4-4-2 system which means they had four forwards tasked with scoring goals (2 starting and 2 subs). The main striker was 30 year old Clint Dempsey who can also play a midfield role. Another prolific partnering striker was 25 year old Jozy Altidore who plays club soccer for Sunderland, England. However, he got injured in the first game of the World Cup against Ghana. Other strikers included 23 year old Aron Johannsson who plays for AZ Alkmaar in Netherlands and 31 year old Chris Wondowolski who plays for San Jose Earthquakes.

The above 23 man team was chosen to represent USA in the 2014 world cup and managed to get out of group stages, but were knocked out by Belgium 2-1 in the knockout-round. Over all, the USA Men’s National Soccer Team did well and looking forward to improve their performance in the next World Cup in Russia.

Mental Toughness

Secrets to Soccer Training: Mental Toughness in Soccer

Mental Toughness in SoccerMental toughness in soccer can be defined as the ability of players to remain determined and committed to achieving training objectives. Mental toughness can be inborn or developed at the tender age by the environment in which a soccer player was brought up. Apart from the physical talent endowment by soccer players, dealing with psychological pressure is a major factor of success in playing soccer.

As one of the secrets to soccer training, mental toughness in soccer considers the following factors:

  • Psychological preparedness of players before a game.
  • How to deal with stress of competition within the team and from other teams.
  • The ability of the players to quickly recover from errors and failures.
  • How the players should tackle tough situations and adjust to each other as well as game changes.

Achieving mental toughness is a psychological process and players are obliged to adhere to certain training practices to ensure they are mentally tough enough for competition. The next question asked then is how can a soccer player achieve mental toughness?

Motivation:
Self motivation is one of the main determinants of mental toughness. Soccer players should be ready to push themselves to the brink in training sessions. This may involve setting personal goals that do not contradict with team goals and fully pursuing them even under minimal encouragement. Players should be self-motivated in achieving training targets which will build up on their mental toughness and eventually reflect on good performances in competitions.

Finding a stable zone:
Finding the correct zone in which players can perform optimally even under high pressure conditions is a major component of mental toughness. Achieving a reduced brain wave activity involves concentrating on training activities and the game plan while avoiding any distractions puts the players in a sufficient state of mental toughness.

Preparation:
Preparedness is equally important in achieving mental toughness. Players need to be disciplined in attending and participating in all training sessions. This way, they will be well prepared and ready for the big day of competition both physically and mentally. Normally, it is hard to be prepared for each and every eventuality but players should be able to anticipate any challenges and have remedial actions in mind to deal with those problems. Some of the challenges in soccer may involve having to play out of position, receiving a yellow card warning and chasing a game after conceeding a goal.

Getting Uncomfortable:
in order for players to realize progression in their game, they must set out to push their training routines to the limits. This approach to soccer training will not only improve players’ problem solving skills but will also enhance their creativity in thinking which will boost the mental toughness of the players.

Visualize:
Before even stepping on the training ground a soccer player should visualize and imagine how they would play around with the ball. For instance, a striker should imagine getting round defenders and scoring goals. This way the player will have it done in their minds and will only be required to redo it with the physical body. Doing this puts the player in a tough mental state.

How To Improve Your Dribbling Skills

Secrets to Soccer Training: How To Improve Your Dribbling Skills

Dribbling is like a racehorse waiting at the gate to be released. When the gate opens or when there is an opening in the defense, you are off to the races.

There are many things that a soccer player needs to do right, in order to fully feel comfortable dribbling a soccer ball. There are many secrets to soccer training that will improve your dribbling skills, including speed, close control, and flexibility.

The following drills and tips are some of proven exercises that will help you improve your dribbling skills:

1. Control the ball with random obstacles

A dribble is only great when a player can dodge any combination of opponents fast and seamlessly. You can never predict the formation of your opponents when you are dribbling. This reason makes it essential to practice dribbling the ball across randomly placed obstacles.

A player can train by placing many cones in a circular formation, but at random locations and then dribbling the ball from one corner to the other, then again from that corner to another. Speed up the drill each time you are comfortable with the speed until you reach the fastest dribbling speed possible.

This drill will help a player develop to the extent that he is able to navigate through any situation during the game.

2. Navigating through a wall of opponents

Placing six cones in a zigzag, 6 yards apart, run to each cone while touching the ball as much as possible with the outside of the foot. This helps you navigate through a crowded area.

Next, take bigger touches from outside the foot for speed dribbling and move the ball from cone to cone. Run around to receive the ball and pass it. This improves the dribble when there is an empty area.

It is important to practice how to finish and shoot the ball. Always add a routine that lets you finish the drill by executing a solid shot. It doesn’t matter if you learn how to improve your soccer dribbling skills if you can’t execute a good shot after evading your opponents.

3. Learn the fancy moves that everyone told you were useless

The foundation for a great dribble comes from being able to control the ball with the insides, outsides, and bottoms of your feet. One of the biggest secrets to soccer training is to practice fancy routines that get you to handle the ball alone.

Get in front of a wall to deflect the ball with your feet. While doing this, try to trap the ball with your feet, chest and head. Learning to handle the ball with your feet will give you a great amount of control. Practice dribbling with body faints and basic cuts and also with a few moves like stepovers, elasticos, 360 spins so as to get comfortable with handling the ball on your own. These will not only be impressive, but will help you gain immense skill in controlling the ball.

4. Work ten times harder than anyone else

Just like anything in life, getting great at dribbling doesn’t come easy. If you want to be a great dribbler, you need to practice like a great dribbler would. Working harder than anyone else will get you to being great, faster.

Learn more drills, research, study, and practice hard. If you are feeling insecure about not being any good, remember that anyone who is currently great started at the level of a novice, became an amateur and then became a pro. Everyone starts at the bottom and you are no different.

5. Get out of the comfort zone

Once you are comfortable with the drills introduced in this article, always look for something harder. Put your limits to the test as that is what will bring forth rapid growth. The moment you let yourself think that you are good enough at something (even something in your life) you will stop growing. The reality is, you are never good enough and there is always something to improve.

Increase the speed of executing your drills constantly. The faster you do them the more dangerous you become to the opponents. Always be in the look out by analyzing professionals who make it look easy. Analyze their skills and see if you can emulate something similar. Study more and pick out methods on how to improve your soccer dribbling skills.

Top 10 secrets to improve your overall soccer skills

Secrets to Soccer Training: Top 10 secrets to improve your overall soccer skills

Many people from around the world love the game of soccer. It is almost like a religion to some people. To improve your game, you will need a lot of practice and learn as much as you can about the game itself. So, here are some of the top soccer secrets to help you improve your overall game.

1. Remember that soccer is a sport to be played by a team
You should always play soccer with that in mind. You should not at any point play for your glory, but for the sake of the whole team. You should make sacrifices for the team and sacrifice some persona recognition.

2. Anticipation:
This is one of the best secrets to soccer training whether you are attacking or defending. You should always anticipate while the ball is moving towards you. You should know what to do with it the moment it gets to you. When you are defending, anticipation is equally important, if you have the ability to foresee the next move of your opponent, this will increase your chances of stopping her or his move. A very crucial thing in this game is velocity.

3. Try to move the ball more than yourself
It is a strategy that is energy saving. This is because if at all the time you are running everywhere on the field, you are likely to get tired within the first few minutes. You should always remember that the ball mostly move faster than you. So it becomes a better idea to move the ball around fast than yourself.

4. Pressing
This means that you should not let your opponent receive the ball so neatly. This is one of the soccer secrets that successful soccer players have being using. Make your opponent receive the ball facing backwards. Put more pressure on her or him and force her or him to make mistakes. However, you should be very careful of injuring your opponent or committing a foul because it will bring more problems.

5. Using the element of surprise
This means that you should not let your next move be too obvious. Change your run rhythm, quick at first and then step on the brakes when your opponent is coming to you. Your opponent will most likely stop and then you should increase your pace again leaving your opponents anchored. When you are dribbling with the ball, you should not at any time be predictable. If you did a move on with the defender, there is high probability that he or she will be more prepared next time, so you should mix up different moves.

6. Using the sides of the field
This is one of the most used secrets to soccer training by many big soccer clubs and national teams. This is mostly when there are too many people in the center. Too many players in the center make it difficult to create game in the area. So you should always make sure to use wing men on your team to try and exploit the sides. Try to penetrate those areas and then as a surprise send the ball to a player in the center area to finish the play. However, you should be very careful not to knock the ball out of the field’s bounds when you are doing this.

7. Developing your sense of orientation or vision
Having a complete view of the game and having a good orientation is difficult especially when you are on the field. Knowing where your opponents and your teammates are is one of the best soccer secrets. This is because it gives you a better perspective and planning your next move.

8. Showing your combative spirit
Your chances of being selected by the coach to be on the main team are high if the coach sees the devotion you are putting in the game. When you are in the field, you should never give up, help your teammates, go up and down, attack and defend and let that attitude be an inspiration for your team.

9. Triangulate
It is one of the commonly used soccer secrets by attackers. You should use your surrounding players to pass the ball to each other very quickly and this will create confusion in your opponent.

10. Remain focused
You should never forget that the game is not over until the referee says so. So you should not lose yourself only because there is little time left or because you are winning. A goal in the last few minutes can make you lose a game.

Normally there are two main tactics used by the soccer teams. In possession soccer tactic the main aim of the team is to retain ball control as much as possible. That allows the players to make many passes with low risk of losing the ball. That tactic requires players with good skills in precise passing and ball control. Playing the possession soccer tactic on the field can tire the opposition team because they have to tackle and run more.

Among the secrets to soccer is another tactic called direct soccer. This tactic is associated often with counter attaching and long ball style. The players try to spend as little time as possible with the ball before passing and they use frequently only one or two touches.

No matter the tactics employed in the game, all the players need to be well trained in some specific passing combinations. Passing combinations offer many tactical possibilities of two against one defender, including the most basic one which is the give-and-go. This involves two teammates using two passes to get around a single defender. The player with the ball dribbles at the defender, passes to a teammate and then immediately receives a return pass.

A similar passing combination is also used in other team games such as lacrosse, field hockey, ice hockey, or basketball. This passing combination is also called the one-two, wall pass, or 2 vs. 1.

This specific passing combination is practical and effective. When properly performed it reduces the risk of losing the ball to a defender. When it is played against a last defender it can be an effective maneuver to get a clean shot before an attacking goal. The wall pass should be introduced early to any beginner soccer player.

The combination is fairly complicated and involves precision timing, good ball skills, knowledgeable thought, and fast decision making. The two teammates, the passer and the receiver, should work together and correctly perform their roles in order to be successful. Usually this passing combination is initiated by the receiver who recognizes a good opportunity and moves to the correct location to receive the pass.

A soccer coach who is working with beginner players needs to make sure that the players are used to passing and receiving in pairs and they are successful with one touch passing. In order to train players in practicing give-and-go a demonstration of the action should be done by 3 coaches or 2 coaches and a player assistant.

The most important things that must to be demonstrated are how close the dribbler should be to the defender in order to be sure the defender is engaged, how to pass the initial pass with the left foot if the receiver is to the right and using the right foot if the receiver is to the left, how the dribbler should run around the defender to the opposite side from the receiver, and how the receiver should be positioned properly to pass the ball back to the initial passer.
